A siege is a special, fun time in Fortress mode when an army attempts to attack and kill all of your dwarves. It is at this time you should activate your military, keep civilians indoors, raise the drawbridges and pray you have your defenses ready. During a siege, the option on the main menu 'Abandon Fortress' changes to 'Succumb to Siege'.

Can they actually be aimed? I've got 2 legendary siege operators, firing ballistas made from masterwork parts. The ammunition they're firing is exceptional quality iron bolts. 3 Answers Sorted by: 8 The wiki doesn't know, so it's safe to say that that is one of Toady's secrets. After being sufficiently "successful" at defending against the siege (killing sufficient attackers, waiting them out, or some combination thereof), the attackers will retreat.

A siege's objective is to exterminate every dwarf in your fortress, or die trying. It is possible to be sieged by all civilized races, with the exception of kobolds (who never go beyond ambushes) and subterranean animal people (who just don't attack at all).

Start early. Siege engines do not fire quickly, so you want high skill to make the few shots you get count. Once trained (some years later), they can be trained up in other civilian skills that are useful whenever they're not at their stations. (See cross-training for suggestions.)

Parley swaps an artifact for a one-time peace. THey won't raid you. But they'll still be at war with you; and Parley is not always an option. Goblins are pretty low on the threat tier. A small trained force of even copper-armed dwarves can take them out for the first few years until they get quite brazen.

So yes, ordinary Dwarves (in addition to Dwarven Towers) can declare war on and siege your fortress. That civilizations clash with each other is also possible, in addition to the towers then sending enemies towards your fort. Haven't seen the attackers yet. Gets a bit much with 4 or 5 towers in range.
