The monumental fountain (better known with the name of "Fontanone") was inspired by the "Fontana dell'Acqua Felice', with the gigantic statue of Moses, built in 1585-88 by Pope Sixtus V. and was built by Giovanni Fontana, with the collaboration of Flaminio Ponzio.
