Spello, nestled on the southern flank of Mount Subasio, between Assisi and Foligno, is part of the club of "The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy" due to its significant environmental, cultural and artistic heritage. The ancient town centre of Umbrian origin, "Hispellum" from the first century BC, was an important Roman town given the title.

Spello turned out to be the perfect base for exploring Umbria, with easy access to other towns by train and a laid-back charm that draws you in. I bought my floral coronet for the Infiorata (see post) at L'Angolo del Macramé, where you can also find bags, necklaces, and lots of girly stuff.

Spello was the most laid back and least crowded. In this piazza, many locals appeared to be relaxing in the shade of trees, and we found a little park around the corner without anyone else there. Loved all the flowers in Spello; the people here seem to really take pride in their little village.
