Jean-François Portaels (Vilvorde, 30 avril 1818 - Schaerbeek, 8 février 1895) est un artiste peintre belge. Issu d'une famille bourgeoise, Jean-François Portaels étudie à l'Académie de Bruxelles auprès de François-Joseph Navez (qui devint par la suite son beau-père). Pour se perfectionner, il suit les cours de Paul Delaroche à Paris, et obtient, en 1842, le Grand Prix de Rome.

Jean François Portaels studied from 1836 to 1841 at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He then went to Paris with his friend Alexandre Nestor Nicolas Robert and worked under Paul Delaroche. In 1842 he won the Prix de Rome. Italy was the new destination and together with Robert Portaels traveled to Florence, where he spent a year.
