1XTech Fig. 1. Refer to Sec. 400.5(A) and (B) for guidance on the ampacity of flexible cords.

We can see the various types of flexible cords and cables in Table 400.4, which takes up seven pages and comprises more than half of Art. 400. The first rule of working with flexible cords and cables is to always use that particular table when determining the extension cord amp rating.

Some other basic NEC Extension Cord rules to always keep in mind include:

  • Always use a cord and fittings identified for the application [400.3].
  • Never use a flexible cord or cable in place of a permanent wiring method.
  • Replace instead of patch or repair a damaged cord or cable. Don’t chance it!

NEC 400.5 Extension Cord Ampacity Rating

Extension Cord Price/Cost, Power Amps Rating, Custom Types & Lengths (4)

NFPA NEC Tables 400.5(A) and 400.5(B) list the allowable ampacity for flexible cords and flexible cables with not more than three current-carrying conductors at an ambient temperature of 86°F. The tables assume copper conductors.

The ampacity from Table 400.5(A) or Table 400.5(B) may need to be adjusted as follows:

  • If the number of current-carrying conductors in a cable or raceway exceeds three, adjust the allowable ampacity of each conductor with the multipliers listed in Table 400.5.
  • If the ambient temperature exceeds 86°F, the temperature correction factors listed in Table 310.16 are used to adjust the flexible cord or cable ampacity

In the United States, letter codes have been defined by Underwriters Labs (UL) to describe various attributes and ratings of portable cords. The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) also has defined similar letter codes, and ongoing standards harmonization should eventually resolve minor differences.

S = Severe Service Cord – 600 volts (also 277/480 or 480) – Cord May be utilized in place of SJ or SV in extra-severe service
SJ = Junior Severe Service – 300 volts (also 120 or 120/208 or 120/240 or 240 or 277, but not 277/480)
SVT = Vacuum cleaner cord, or light-duty cord
T = Tinsel Cord (only if the first letter of code for a portable cord)
T = Thermoplastic (if not the first letter of code)
H = Heat Resistant
HH = High Heat Resistant
N = Nylon Outer Jacket Material
E = Elastomer (flexible thermoplastic that looks and feels like rubber)
O = Oil-Resistant Outer Jacket
OO = Oil-Resistant Outer Jacket and Oil-Resistant Interior Insulation
P = Parallel Cord (conductors are not twisted around each other)
V = Vacuum Cord – 300 volts (typically used with vacuum cleaners and other portable cleaning equipment)
W-A = Weather Resistant (UL approved for indoor and outdoor use)
W = Weather and Water Resistant (CSA approved for indoor and outdoor use)

Can Extension Cords be Buried?

Extension Cord Price/Cost, Power Amps Rating, Custom Types & Lengths (11)

Question: can extension cords be buried?

Answer: Typically NO. We say typically because we do manufacture large-sized extension power cables that are dual rated as Direct Burial TC-ER. These would be sizes 1/0 and larger and would be used mostly in the heavy industrial applications, mining, etc.

Typical Extension cords are made from SOOW, SJOOW, and other portable flexible cord types which are designated under NEC Article 400. They are NOT rated for direct burial or for permanent installation.

If you require an extension cord that is direct burial rated just let us know, we can make you exactly what you need.
